Films announced for UW-Baraboo’s World Cinema Series
An epic film set in 16th century warring Japan and a German thriller chasing an orange-haired punk girl both are on the docket for the fourth annual World Cinema Series at the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County this fall.
The series, which kicked off Sept. 24 with the screening of "Cinema Paradiso," continues Monday, Oct. 22 with "Run Lola Run."
The film will be shown and discussed at 6:30 p.m. at the R.G. Brown Theatre on campus. All World Cinema Series screenings are free and open to the public.
"Run Lola Run" (1999) is a fast-paced thriller from German director Tom Tykwer. Lola, played by Franka Potente, is running through the streets of a post-unification Berlin in a film that gives new perspective to the role of film endings and the definition of crime.
Dr. Annette Kuhlmann, associate professor of Anthropology and Sociology at UW-Baraboo/Sauk County, will present the film.
The series continues on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. with a screening of "Kagemusha" (1980), an Oscar-nominated film by director Akira Kurosawa. It is based on Daimyo Takeda Shingen and the climactic Battle of Nagashino (1575), considered a turning point in Japanese military history as western-style tactics and weaponry prevailed over traditional Japanese warfare.
“Great foreign films, like 'Kagemusha,' help connect Baraboo to the world community of the past and present,” said assistant professor of history Michael Jacobs, who will present the film.
The program will pick up again in the spring with "The Middle of the World" on Feb. 25, "M" on March 31 and "Bhaji on the Beach" on April 28.
“This is an excellent opportunity for members of the community to see some wonderful films,” said English professor Marc Seals. “It is also a chance to discover what we have to offer here at UW-Baraboo/Sauk County.”
Since 2003 the World Cinema Series has brought a wide range of films with global origins and local interest to the community free of charge. The program is funded by the Sauk County Arts, Humanities, and Historic Preservation Committee and coordinated by Jacobs and Seals. Following each film, there will be a brief discussion led by a faculty member from the college.
“These films are an important part of the learning experience for a number of classes on campus,” Jacobs said. “By opening the showings and discussions to the larger community, we hope to enhance the experience for students and community members alike.”
