TRIPS & EXCURSIONS

Discovering Mineral Point
Whether you’ve been to Mineral Point or would be a first time visitor, this small town has a lot to offer.  Mineral Point is full of history and art with a downtown full of unique stores, art studios, restaurants and cafes.  We will get to know the history of Mineral Point, by starting our tour at Pendarvis, part of the Wisconsin Historical Society since 1970, where we will learn about early immigration and mining.  Pendarvis’ costumed guides will lead us through six original Cornish settlement buildings.  You will see how the miners lived, where they slept, how food was stored and prepared and even the pub they visited. We will also visit Shake Rag Alley. Back in the early 1800s when Mineral Point was a rough and tumble lead mining town, the little valley surrounding Federal Spring was called Shake Rag Under the Hill. When Madison florist Al Felly bought up all the little homesteads around the spring circa 1970 and planted the area into a lovely garden with artisans doing their crafts in the buildings, he called it Shake Rag Alley. October 14, 2004  local artists and community members created Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts.  In its short 8 years, Shake Rag Alley has worked diligently to offer the most unique and creative workshops and special event weekends featuring the creative minds of local artists.   On our tour to Mineral Point, Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts will present and discuss their mission of inspiring creativity and nurturing the site’s history as well as provide a glimpse into the many activities that take place there throughout the year. We will have lunch at the Red Rooster Café, a favorite spot in the heart of the historic downtown. Quaintly decorated with red roosters, they have been making traditional Cornish pasty, figgyhobbin and other Cornish specialties for over 30 years. After lunch we will have time to explore the numerous shops, antique stores, boutiques, art galleries and other unique businesses on the main street in Mineral Point.

Beatbox 101 (Vocal Percussion) with Instructor Anthony Lamarr
Beat-boxing is a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of producing drum beats, rhythm, and musical sounds using one's mouth, lips, tongue, and voice. Beat-boxing today is connected with hip-hop culture, being one of "the elements", although it is not limited to hip-hop music. The term "beat-boxing" is sometimes used to refer to vocal percussion, used by most college and professional a cappella groups, which attempts a more complete facsimile of the pop music that these groups primarily perform. Vocal percussionists use three basic sounds: bass drum, snare drum, and cymbal. Variations on these sounds can be used to approximate other elements of a drum kit. Over the course of one week, Anthony Lamarr will be your guide as you explore the world of beat-boxing!

Do you love Glee on TV? We will make it a reality!
